MARTINSVILLE—Competing against some of the top teams in the state, Perry Central placed all its scorers in the top 40 to finish sixth in a 15-team boys cross country invitational Saturday.
“We had a pretty good day,” said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett. “We were only six points from fifth and nine points from fourth.
“Martinsville was the only team from our semistate that beat us, and I was pleased with how we competed with them.
“We almost had five guys under 17 minutes—our fifth guy ran it in 17:02. That was the same time as our second runner last year in this meet.”
Perry Central moved up to run in the race with the bigger schools. Columbus North, ranked No. 1 in the state by IndianaRunner.com, won the meet with 41 points. No. 3 North Central was second with 46 and No. 25 Chesterton third with 92.
Eric Scheiber led Perry Central, placing 22nd in 16:27. Teammate Michael Ernst was 23rd in 16:28.
Other Perry Central scorers were Ian Bashor, 30th in 16:42; Jake Schwartz, 31st in 16:48; and Neal Schwartz, 40th in 17:02.
Noah Gatwood, 49th in 17:16, and Alex Newton, 61st in 17:34, also ran for the Commodores.
Perry Central finished eighth in the girls race despite not running Rachael Rayford as a precautionary move to keep her from another injury.
“When we run two meets in one week, we’re only going to run her in the first one,” said Barnett. “There were three teams from our semistate right in front of us and I’m pretty sure with Rachael we would’ve beaten Martinsville.”
Freshman Cathryn Peter led Perry Central with a 36th-place finish in 21:27.
The Commodores had tight grouping among their top four runners. Lavina Schwartz was 38th in 21:30, Amy Schwartz 42nd in 21:43, and Susan Schwartz 45th in 21:47.
Robbi Thomas was 75th in 23:26 to complete their scoring.
Lindsey Gengelbach, 79th in 24:04, and Megan Lindauer, 81st in 24:13, also ran for the Commodores.
Jordan Tomecek of Milan, Mich., won the race in 18:28. “She’s supposedly one of the top runners in the nation and she lived up to the billing,” said Barnett.
Perry Central finished fourth in the junior varsity boys race, which included the big and small schools.
Paul Schwartz led the Commodores in 21st place in 17:57, his first finish under 18 minutes.
Perry Central did not have enough runners for a JV girls team score. Sara Brown was 39th in 23:49 to lead four Commodores.
Perry Central will compete in the Brown County invitational Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
