COLUMN: A special place to live

-A A +A

Michelle Duncan, a fourth-grade teacher at Perry Central, asked her class – in the days before the end of the school year – to write about why Perry County is a great place to live.

Students were assigned to write letters to the editor. Michelle chose three letters and submitted them for publication. Those penned by Alyssa Hinton, Mallory Lynch and Chyanne Austin were among the best. I’m sure they were all interesting.

All of us who live or work – New Boston is where I lay my head at night but I spend much more time here – in Perry County have our own list of reasons why this is such a great place to call home. So here are the reasons, according to three well-versed fourth-graders, why Perry County is so wonderful.

Dear Mr. Luecke:

I am writing to you about why Perry County is a great place to live. Perry County is a great place to live and I am not lying to you. I have lived here almost 10 years now and I have loved every minute of it.

Mr. Luecke, have you ever noticed how peaceful Perry County can be? I can be just riding in a car with the wind blowing through my hair and I would not have a care in the world. Perry County is very quiet, too. So, if you want to do something that doesn’t involve a lot of noise, Perry County is the place for you.

Everyone in Perry County is very nice, so if you just moved here and you need directions, your neighbor could help you. The people are very friendly and they will help you with anything you need.

Perry County isn’t just a peaceful place and full of nice people. It is also caring. If you have a sickness and you really need help, citizens of Perry County will do anything to get the help you need. They have benefits to help raise money to help them pay their hospital bills.

Perry County is a great place to live. These are just a few of the reasons why I believe this.

Dear Mr. Luecke:

I am writing this letter about why Perry County is a great place to live. It is so different than the other counties. It is just the most perfect place ever, I think! Everyone puts a lot of effort into this amazing community!

First of all, if anyone asks for help, I guarantee that some person will help you. They are just so nice! No one in my life that I have ever met from Perry County is mean. That’s pretty good, you have to admit it!!! Everyone is just totally nice!

Also, the outdoor life in Perry County is something to be proud of. We have plenty of wildlife and, now that I come to think of it, we have the Hoosier National Forest! Really, that’s a big part of us. We are healthy and don’t litter. That makes this place even well, MORE perfect, if there is such a thing….

Next, what I have to say is the schools here are a lot better in Perry County than in other counties. We’re blessed! All three are nice and everyone is thankful for their education. The teachers we have are very brilliant!!!

As you can see, Perry County is the place to be. We have wildlife, perfect education and more than enough of friendly people to meet. I can tell that everyone puts a lot of effort into it!

Dear Mr. Luecke:

I am writing to you about why Perry County is a great place to live. People are kind, generous and full of love. Children are cared for in one of the three different school systems.

Many family activities are in Perry County. Such as parks, camps, lakes and the Ohio River to swim in. Many parks are in Perry County like Castle Park, Sunset Park and Leopold Park.

Each are very fun. Lakes in Perry County are Tipsaw Lake, Oriole Lake, Indian lake, Saddle Lake and Celina Lake. Alton is near the Ohio River and a boat ramp and diving board is there.

Hunting seasons are common in Perry County. Many people go white tail deer hunting and turkey hunting. Squirrel hunting is popular and fishing is also very popular. Views of sunsets over lakes are the colors of orange and purple and pink, people who visit Perry County are amazed by these views.

Perry County is a wonderful county and gives children a good education. That is why many people live here.
