LEOPOLD—Poor field goal shooting sank Perry Central in its 41-34 PLAC boys basketball loss to Mitchell Saturday night.

Perry Central jumped to a 7-0 lead with 5:05 left in the first quarter as Alex Rogier scored on a three-point shot and made two free throws. Rogier led the Commodores with 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Early in the second quarter the Commodores extended their lead to 16-7 on a three-pointer by Ian Hahus

Mitchell went on a 10-4 run to finish the first half, though, to trail only 20-19 at halftime. David Wintczak scored seven of those 10 points.

In the first half Perry Central made 6 of 23 field-goal attempts for 26.1 percent.

Unfortunately for the Commodores their shooting didn’t get any better in the second half as they made 12 field goals in 49 attempts for 24.5 percent.

Perry Central Coach Matt Carter said, “We had some shooters taking good shots, got the ball inside and it wouldn’t go (in the basket).”

Mitchell didn’t fare much better in the first half making 7 of 24 for 29.2 percent. For the game the Bluejackets made 15 of 42 attempts for 35. 7 percent.

After a Rogier basket to start the third quarter, the Bluejackets Wintczak made a three-pointer from the right side of the key tying the game at 22.

The Commodores’ Trevor King tied it at 24-24 with 4:52 left in the third quarter.

The Bluejackets extended their 2-3 zone defense so their guards were standing on the volleyball spiking line. The Commodores started their offense farther out than they wanted.

Carter said, “We talked about that before we started the third quarter. We didn’t penetrate as well in the second half. (And) it’s hard to pressure the ball when you don’t score many points.”

Wintczak hit two free throws and a field goal followed by Darron Tanksley’s three-pointer from the right wing, putting Mitchell ahead 31-24 at the end of the third quarter.

The Bluejackets increased their lead to 10 at 39-29 with  2:44 left.

Wintczak led the Bluejackets with 17 points and Phillip Owens grabbed nine rebounds.

Perry Central dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the PLAC. Mitchell improved to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

The Commodores will visit Crawford County Friday at 7 p.m.
