Claise shuts out Crawford, Paoli

-A A +A

MARENGO—Miranda Claise pitched shutouts against PLAC opponents Saturday and Monday as Perry Central put itself in the driver’s seat for its first conference softball title.
Claise pitched a four-hitter as the Commodores beat Crawford County 3-0 Satur-day. She struck out nine and walked two.
Brittany Parker hit a triple and scored on an error for the game’s first run in the second inning.
Morgan Richardson capped the scoring with a solo home run over the left-field fence in the seventh inning.
Sydney Goffinet went 2 for 4 to lead Perry Central’s eight-hit attack.
An even more impressive win for the Commodores was a 7-0 road victory Monday over Paoli, which was ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 2A.
Claise pitched a three-hitter in that game, striking out three and walking three. And her teammates backed her with errorless defense.
The Commodores had 13 hits but did not break the game open until the seventh inning, when they scored four runs to chase Paoli starter Taylor Pigg.
Pigg struck out three and walked none.
Brooke Litherland went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Perry Central’s offense. Goffinet went 3 for 4 with a double and drove in one run.
Autumn Lain added two hits and Parker hit a double.
“The girls played really well tonight, but I still think we can hit even better,” said Perry Central Coach Mark Rothgerber.
Paoli, the preseason PLAC favorite, slipped to 1-1 in the conference and 8-3 overall.
This was the second team ranked in the top five in the state in Class 2A that Perry Central has beaten this season, as Providence was ranked fifth when the Commodores won that matchup April 9.
Perry Central, 3-0 in the PLAC and 6-4 overall, will host Tell City Friday at 5 p.m.
