CANNELTON—Brooke Powers and Nakaa Myers each scored 11 points as Cannelton beat Portland Christian 57-41 in girls basketball Saturday.
Sarah Powers, Payton Reed and Sammie James each added nine points to the Bulldogs’ balanced attack.
James grabbed 10 rebounds, Myers nine, Brooke Powers seven, and Jaci Garrett and Whitney Nugent six apiece.
Garrett also had four assists.
Cannelton Coach Jeff Miller said the game “started out very physical. Early on, we got caught up in running up and down the floor with them and that led to the physical play.
“I told the girls at the half to control the tempo and take high percentage shots.
“The thing I liked the most is the girls proved they know how to finish the game.”
The Bulldogs also concentrated on controlling the tempo Friday as they won a road game over Rock Creek Christian 49-25.
“The first half we did not play that well defensively,” said Miller. “We challenged them to go out in the second half and focus on defense, and we allowed only 10 second-half points.”
Sarah Powers led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Myers scored 13 and Reed 11.
James grabbed 11 rebounds. Garrett made eight steals.
Reed had six steals and three assists despite early foul trouble.
When she had to sit out with foul trouble, “Whitney Nugent came in and provided a great effort,” said Miller. “Even though she did not score, she played the point with great passion.”
Cannelton’s win streak ended with a 52-42 loss at Lanesville Monday.
Lanesville built a 34-15 halftime lead.
“We just did not play defense at all in the first half,” said Miller. “They had two girls probably 5-11 and we just weren’t defending the lower block.”
Besides those two hurting the Bulldogs inside, Erin Dorgay, a 5-foot-4 guard, hurt them outside. She scored 18 points in the first half and 29 for the game. She hit 11 of 16 free throws.
Sarah Powers led Cannelton with 15 points. Myers and Brooke Powers each added nine.
Brooke Powers grabbed seven rebounds, James six, and Sarah Powers five.
Cannelton switched from a 1-2-2 zone defense to a 3-2 high in the second half. “We played really well defensively in the second half,” said Miller.
But they weren’t able to make up the halftime deficit.
Cannelton, 7-12, is scheduled to host Breckinridge County tonight at 6.
