CANNELTON—Cannelton forced 34 turnovers as it beat Whitesville Trinity 49-41 in girls basketball Monday.

Trinity led 31-15 early in the third quarter. Then the Bulldogs “got after the ball a little bit with our (1-2-2) press,” said Cannelton Coach Mike Garrett. “I think they only went seven deep, so they started getting a little worn out.

“We got some layups and we also started hitting the offensive boards a little better.”

Sophomore guards Sarah Powers and Payton Reed scored 17 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Cannelton.

Freshman Allicyn Garrett came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs in rebounds with six.

Jaci Garrett made four steals and Reed had three assists.

Tara Medcalf, a 5-11 forward/center, led Trinity with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Cannelton lost a road game to McLean County, Ky., 68-29 Tuesday.

“I think we were a little worn down from last night against Whitesville,” said Mike Garrett. “And they shot lights out--they hit 8 of 13 three-pointers in the first half.”

Powers scored 13 points to lead Cannelton, 4-2. Allicyn Garrett grabbed six rebounds.
