INDIANAPOLIS - Sherry Hamlet, a terminally ill woman seeking release from prison where she was incarcerated after a conviction on drug charges, died June 5. Hamlet, 45, a former Tell City resident, had filed a request to have her sentence for dealing in a controlled substance and maintaining a common nuisance modified.
She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year and her children said she had only weeks to live. Prosecutor Robert Collins opposed her release and a court hearing was scheduled for June 29.
Under a plea agreement she agreed to in late 2007, Hamlet was to serve half of a 20-year sentence in prison and the remainder on probation. She was charged in May 2007 after police searching a home in the 1200 block of 11th Street in Tell City found her in possession of marijuana, prescription painkillers and Ecstasy.
Hamlet's children picketed Collins' office last month to protest his opposition to Hamlet's early release.
