CANNELTON - Cannelton Police Chief Kenny Kellems said Monday evening a kidnapping that reportedly occurred Friday afternoon never happened.

A 14-year-old girl who claimed to have been abducted while walking in the area of Fourth and Washington streets at approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday lied to avoid getting in trouble, Kellems said as he and others entered a county-commissioners meeting Monday.

The girl called 911 at approximately 8:20 p.m. Friday and said she'd just escaped from two men in a white van. Asked Saturday morning if he thought her report was credible, Kellems said he had to take it seriously.

He said Monday a number of parents had called his office to ask if their children were in danger of abduction.
