TELL CITY - A year-old girl pronounced dead Sunday at Perry County Memorial Hospital died of natural causes, likely from a bacterial infection, Perry County's coroner said Monday afternoon.

Sashia Marcum died at 4:48 p.m. at the hospital, Darrel Riley said. An autopsy was performed Monday morning in Louisville, Ky., and showed no sign of foul play or injury, he said. State police and the Indiana Department of Child Services were notified after the child's death and began an investigation.

Riley said the girl's parents are from the Ferdinand area but had been spending the last couple of days in Cannelton. She became ill and her condition worsened quickly over a matter of hours, Riley said.

Riley said meningitis has been ruled out as a cause of the girl's death.
