Bolin, Taylor win council races

-A A +A

Voter turnout light

PERRY COUNTY – Political newcomers Danny Bolin and John Taylor scored primary victories Tuesday in contested races for district Perry County Council seats. In the District 2 race, Bolin received 163 votes to Stan Goffinet’s 139. Bolin, a professional photographer and former News editor, received 54 percent of the vote to Goffinet’s 46 percent.

In District 3, incumbent Chet Mathena fell to Taylor by 46 votes. Taylor garnered 207 votes, or 56 percent, to Mathena’s 161 votes, or 44 percent.

The two races for county council were the only locally contested races and that likely contributed to very light turnout. Only 1,470 votes were cast in the primary and nearly 400 of those were cast in early voting or by absentee ballot. With 12,349 people on the county’s voting rolls, the percentage of voters taking part in the election was only 11.9 percent.
