Bike tour raising funds for lanes

PERRY COUNTY - Imagine cycling through the scenic rolling hills of Perry County on a beautiful summer morning with family and friends. Now, imagine that you are helping create bike lanes in Tell City as you ride.

This is the opportunity the public will have Saturday, Aug. 1 when they join other cyclists for the Siberian Summer Bike Tour of Perry County. Cyclists will have the option to travel a 8-, 20-, 60- or 75-mile route through the beautiful rolling hills of southern Indiana.

The tour will help raise funds for a matching grant from the Welborn Baptist Foundation to construct 10,000 linear feet of bike lanes throughout Tell City. The Perry County Greenway Initiative has secured this grant to help support Tell City's sidewalk creation grant that will result in new sidewalks from William Tell Elementary School, along Tell Street, all the way to 19th Street. The lanes will connect the new sidewalks to most of the city's parks and the new Windy Creek walking and cycling trail.  The lanes will also connect to the current bike lanes in downtown Tell City and extend to Sunset Park where the River Walk trail is in the final planning stages.

The Siberian Summer Bike Tour is also part of the Perry County Wellness 2009 Initiative. Perry County Wellness will provide a T-shirt to each rider.  Perry County Wellness is sponsored by Perry County Memorial Hospital, Home Mutual Insurance, and First State Bank.  The Perry County Wellness initiative's goal is to encourage residents to exercise and live a healthier lifestyle.

The cost is $25 per individual, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are available locally at Hauenstein's at 547 Main St., Hollinden Realty at 621 Main St., the Perry County Convention and Visitor's Bureau at 601 Main St., all in Tell City, other local businesses, or by contacting Rebecca Fenn at 547-6818 or by contacting perrycountygreenway@gmail.com. A new Web site for the Greenway Initiative is being developed and should be up and running by Wednesday.

Anyone wishing to donate to the bike-lane project of the Perry County Greenway Initiative may send a check to Perry County Greenway Initiative, P.O. Box 73, Tell City, IN 47586.  For more information about the Greenway project, contact any steering committee member, Tony Hollinden, David Goffinet, Bob Ramsbottom, Tom McCart or Fenn.
