TELL CITY – A Tell City woman is accused of battering a child she was caring for. According to Tell City Police Department Lt. Alan Malone, the Perry County Department of Child Services contacted police Tuesday about an investigation involving a child under the age of 14 being a possible victim of child abuse. Malone said a medical exam of the child turned up suspicious marks, which, in turn, were reported to DCS.
Once the investigation was looked into by the Tell City Police Department, it was found the child may have been in the care of a babysitter, Felecia Schaad, 37, of 723 13th St., at the time the injuries occurred. Malone said interviews were conducted and probable cause was established for a charge of battery on a child under the age of 14, a Level 6 felony.
Schaad was arrested Friday and lodged in the Perry County Detention Center.
Assisting the Tell City Police Department with the investigation were the Department of Child Services and the Indiana State Police.
Malone said children cry for a number of reasons and “that can be frustrating for a parent or caregiver,” he said. “We urge people when they get frustrated, to just take a deep breath, sit the child somewhere safely and walk away for a little bit. This can decrease the chances of the parent or caregiver trying to forcefully trying to get the child to stop crying.”
