TELL CITY – A determined 17-year-old athlete from Tell City ranked fourth in the nation for his age as an amateur boxer, hopes to compete in a national event at the end of the month. However, he’s going to need some support from the community for that to happen.
Dakota Alvey is a junior at Tell City Junior-Senior High School and participates in football and wrestling. He is currently trying to raise $1,500 to attend the USA Boxing National Championship in Spokane, Wash. Alvey planned to set up a booth at Saturday’s mixed martial arts fights in Cannelton to solicit donations after much of his previous funding fell through.
Alvey attended last summer’s USA Boxing Junior Olympic National Competition in Alabama but was defeated in the quarterfinals.
Alvey trains in Evansville and has helped prepare firefighters and police officers who participate in Guns & Hoses competitions in that city. Anyone wanting to support his upcoming trip can call 608-2084 or (812) 393-0632. (CORRECTION: THE 608 number was incorrect in our print edition.)
