Field offices hiring managers, support staff

PERRY COUNTY - Looking for a part-time job while helping to ensure Perry County is fully counted in the 2010 census? Then one of several field-office positions with the U.S. Census Bureau could be in your future.

Preparations are under way for the 23rd decennial census and the Chicago Region will open 11 temporary early-local census offices in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin late this year. Hiring is under way and will continue through early 2009. An additional 25 local offices will open in late 2009 with peak hiring taking place in the spring of 2010.

Each field office will have six managers and support staff of supervisors, clerks, administrative assistants and technicians.

Information on testing locations and dates hasn't been released yet but residents interested in census jobs can obtain more information at www.census.gov/rochi/www/2010 Jobs.html. Evaluation criteria for all jobs are detailed at the site.

Applicants for census jobs must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age and have a valid Social Security number and driver's license. They must also pass a written management test and pass a security-background check.

The 30-minute, multiple-choice tests contain questions on clerical skills, reading, number skills, evaluating alternatives and organization skills.

Applicants for managerial or supervisory positions may be required to take one-hour written tests that cover a range of management challenges and situations.
