LEOPOLD—Sydney Goffinet hit a triple and a home run in a 14-run third-inning that carried Perry Central past Tell City 22-5 in girls softball Friday.
Perry Central had seven hits that inning, with Ashley Guillaume also getting two.
The Commodores also took advantage of six walks, a hit batsman, four wild pitches and three passed balls that inning, which saw Tell City go through three pitchers.
Goffinet started the inning with a triple to left field.
A walk, a stolen base, and RBI singles by Brittany Parker and Ashley Guillaume followed to put the Commodores ahead 7-3.
After another walk, Autumn Lain reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed two runs to score.
Two more walks, a wild pitch, and two passed balls produced three more runs.
Goffinet followed with a towering home run over the center-field fence.
Brooke Litherland then beat out an infield hit. One out later, Guillaume hit her second RBI single of the inning.
After Lexi Aders was hit by a pitch, Lain hit a two-run triple to left.
Goffinet added a double the next inning as she went 3 for 4 with everything but a single for the cycle.
Guillaume also went 3 for 4 and Litherland added two of the Commodores’ 12 hits.
Hannah Edwards drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the second inning.
Parker, Guillaume and Lain each added two RBIs.
“We’ve been working on our hitting a lot the last couple of weeks and it’s paid off,” said Perry Central Coach Mark Rothgerber. “Tonight we adjusted well to four different pitchers’ speeds and locations.
“Paoli was a good hitting game for us, but we hit the ball a lot harder tonight.”
“They’re a good hitting team,” Tell City Coach John Hayes said of the Commodores, “but we’ve got to do a better job helping our pitchers out. I just don’t think we make enough plays in the field at this point.”
The game was not a thing of beauty on defense for either team. Tell City committed five errors and had five passed balls; Perry Central had four errors and two passed balls.
Tell City scored three runs without a hit to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Marksmen’s Sydney Goffinet reached base when Perry Central’s Sydney Goffinet dropped a throw at first base.
Two outs later, Derrian Zabel was hit by a pitch. Natalie Peter then hit a fly ball that the right fielder dropped, allowing two runs to score.
Peter continued home on the play and was safe when the pitcher, covering the plate, dropped a throw.
Rothgerber was pleased with the way his players responded after that bad inning, though. “They stepped it up instead of getting down,” he said.
Miranda Claise pitched a complete game for the win. She struck out six and walked one.
McKenzie Hayes hit a triple to lead Tell City’s four-hit attack. Madison Schuetter had the Marksmen’s only RBI with a fifth-inning single.
Perry Central improved to 7-4 while Tell City fell to 2-10.
